Book Artist Girl Scout Badge Experience

10/21/2021 08:00 AM - 12/31/2024 11:00 PM ET

Description

We will start our program with an overview of how books have changed, both in construction and purpose over time. During this 2 hour class we will discuss basic book anatomy terms, such as head, tail, spine, and fore-edge as well as the contents of modern books such as copyright pages, table of contents, and index.

Together we will create a simple stab-bound book so everyone can go home with their own hand-made book based on a binding style that is estimated by some scholars to be over 1,000 years old.

Once we have successfully created our simple book we will discuss artist books and how modern artists use the elements of shape and time to create books that are also works of art.

We will end our class by creating a simple yet dynamic artist book form called a star-book.

Both of these books are simple to make and only require common household tools such as scissors, glue, paper, and needle and thread, so participants will be easily able to reproduce and explore these forms on their own in the future.

Up to 10 book kits will be provided for the class, please arrange the number of supplies needed with your instructor prior to class. Additional book kits are available through our store for $5 per kit. Troop-leaders, adult chaperones, and parents are encouraged to join us in creating books too, but of course instruction priority will be given to our young learners.

*Grades 6-8, this course is specifically designed for the Cadette Girl Scout Badge: Book Artist, however it can easily be scaled to fit other age groups and other programs. Please contact us at contact@frederickbookarts.org if you would like more information on how this program can be altered to fit the goals for your group's Experience.

Please note the initial sign up EVENT REGISTRATION form will ask for the number of attendees, please choose ONE and let us know the number of participants in the emailed google form sent after registration. Unfortunately our current system does not support purchasing a group event easily. If you have any questions or would like to reach out to discuss or confirm a date before signing up for the experience please contact us at: contact@frederickbookarts.org. Once you purchase this experience you will receive an email with a link to a form to tell us a little more about your troop or group and we will contact you to schedule a time that works well with the teacher, FBAC, and your group or troop. We do require at least one adult troop leader or chaperone be present during the program, and two present if there are more than 8 children present.
