Wednesdays 6:00pm-8:30pm Eastern - June 12, 19, 26
In-person class taught by Charlotte Mauler Hayes
$135 for entire series ($30 discount)
Part I: This is an introduction of a very beginner-friendly binding called stab binding, a traditional Asian form of bookbinding. This class is the first of an ongoing 3 part series of Stab Binding, but also that will let you explore other book forms. We will explore three different traditional sewing patterns and will give you the foundation needed to take Stab Binding II and Stab Binding III.
During this class we will learn three of the more traditional bindings as well as discuss ways to think about stab binding to let you explore different patterns in the future.
We will learn:
Yotsume Toji (Four-Hole Binding)
Koki Toji (Noble Binding)
Asa-No-Ha Toji (Hemp Leaf Binding)
Part II: We will be discussing a method to create a hardcover for our traditional stab bound books. We will also be learning the Kikko Toji (Tortoise Shell Binding) style of sewing to use on this book.
Part III: This is the last class in the three part stab binding series. We will be discussing creative covers and really start to explore and play with possibilities including concertina and dos-a-dos with stab binding and extra decorative elements that can be added.
NOTE: We set our pricing to pay our instructors a fair wage and cover materials, but one of FBAC’s goals is to give access to the experience of all things bookbinding and printing to anyone who is interested. If you or someone you know would like to participate in a class but do not have the funding please reach out to contact@frederickbookarts.org and we will do what we can so no one has to miss out on the experiences we offer.
