Mixed Media Puzzle Print

Students will create a multi-colored relief print using craft foam and carved linoleum.

Students may bring a line drawing of their own or use one that the teacher has supplied.

Day 1: Students will transfer their line drawing onto a piece of craft foam and a piece of linoleum. They will carefully cut the craft foam shapes apart, thus creating a “jigsaw puzzle” of their image. Each piece will then be inked with its assigned color and assembled and printed on a piece of paper, in this way creating the colorful background of their print. This will be repeated on five sheets of paper.

Day 2: Students will carve their linoleum, leaving only the lines or small details. When this step is completed, students will ink and print their linoleum onto their five papers with the colorful background, in this way adding the detail for the entire image.
