In-Studio Class
Fun for ages 13 to adult; please email FBAC to let us know if any participants that are under 18 and plan to have an adult assistant stay with anyone younger than 16 years old.

Do you have a collection of photos stored on your phone from trips? Do you have other collected mementos from trips or items you’ve collected inspired by places you hope to travel? Revive those old photos stored on your phone, print them and bring them to class.
In this two-session class you will make two different styles of envelope books themed on travel. Your books will draw inspiration from either a cherished trip you have taken or help you manifest an adventure to a desired place.
In class one we will make an accordion envelope wallet book, to store your favorite photos. All supplies to create the book will be provided and you will bring your favorite same sized photos. The ideal size for photos is either 3x5 or 4x6. In the first session we will also begin to design and develop the concept for a second sewn envelope book. We will discuss the book’s structure and possibilities to help you define how you’d like to make your book. Materials for the book’s structure and envelopes will be provided. You bring items you’d like to include or make something out of to be housed in the individual envelopes. In the second class we will construct the sewn envelope book and as time permits make items to house in the envelopes.
Supplies needed by participants:
Bring to class any mementos, photographs, postcards, ticket stubs, brochures, stamps or anything that reminds you of your previous trip(s) or desired travel location(s). You can select from a few different size envelope patterns, but the largest will be 4x6 so think of items that would work within the scope of these sizes.
About the instructor Kimberly Hedges

Kimberly became interested in Book as Art while working in the education department at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. There she was devoted to exploring their extensive book collection and taking every opportunity to develop education programs bringing book artists to the museum to teach. That lead her to focus her artistic pursuits in bookmaking and she has spent the past 25 years exploring this versatile art form. Recently retired after twenty years of service from Americans for the Arts after overseeing the organization’s technology, she now spends her time making books, teaching book making, and is reviving her interests from college in printmaking. As much as she loves learning new things about book making, she also loves teaching and helping kids and adults see possibilities and joy as they explore their creativity. You can see her bookmaking at https://www.techartbook.com.
NOTE:
We set our pricing to pay our instructors a fair wage and cover materials, but one of FBAC’s goals is to give access to the experience of all things bookbinding and printing to anyone who is interested. If you or someone you know would like to participate in a class but do not have the funding please reach out to contact@frederickbookarts.org and we will do what we can so no one has to miss out on the experiences we offer.
