Kids Exploring Block Printing with Different Foam Types

This class is a hands-on, exploratory experience with block printing using different types of foam, tools and printing techniques designed just for kids!

Foam type #1: Each student will learn basic block printing techniques using one 3" x 5" piece of heat moldable foam. Moldable foam blocks turn everyday textures into reusable custom stamps! The foam is heated, imprinted with fun textures and objects, inked, then printed. But the best part, you can create all new prints by reheating the block to reset the surface.

Foam type #2: Continuing the printing experience, the students will be given four 4" x 6" foam plates to etch their own custom images. Plates will be printed using 2 different styles and inks. Take home items will include one reusable foam block, four etched foam plates, and countless beautiful prints.

Please Note:

-This class is a parent assisted class, so please be prepared to stay.

-Students are encouraged to bring fun items that will provide texture for their foam block.

-Please bring image ideas to class for their foam plates. The work area is 4" x 6" or smaller.

-Students will be using sharp scissors and messy inks.

-An adult will be in charge of the heat tool.

About the instructor: Marcey Jastrab

Marcey Jastrab combines a love of the natural world with crafting traditions of old to create unique, handmade items. She can be found making brooms, blacksmithing, gardening, or lino printing.

Marcey has also been a lifelong teacher. She started by teaching her little sister how to read on a chalkboard.  From there she taught college volunteers on archaeological digs, bio/chem/physics in public high school, STEM classes at the public library, and now medical research at a medical school in Maryland. Combining professional teaching with her practice of the old traditions, Marcey loves sharing the creative joy in making things by hand.

We set our pricing to pay our instructors a fair wage and cover materials, but one of FBAC’s goals is to give access to the experience of all things bookbinding and printing to anyone who is interested.
