Join Catherine Cross Tsintzos as she demonstrates all of the basics of western paper making including techniques using deckles and moulds, sizing, pulps, and explanations of what fibers work best. Learn methods to preserve and embellish your hand made paper, including adding fun elements like dried flowers and seeds. To complete the project, there will be a simple bookbinding lesson on stab-binding and pamphlet stitches to produce a beautiful finished journal. Learn the tools, techniques, and terms through Catherine's unique slideshow approach of detailed images of the step-by-step processes with, examples, discussions, answering questions, and time for sharing as a participant. Ages 18 and up.

Supplies:

  • Mould and Deckle - can be bought or made; if making a round one an embroidery hoop and screening can be used
  • Blender of food processor
  • Water source
  • Recycled paper (torn into 1" squares or shredded) or preprocessed fibers (cotton linter, abaca, etc.)
  • Plant material (flower petals, small leaves, crushed dried leaves, thin pressed flowers, seeds, roots)
  • Flat drying surface (glass or plexi)
  • Sponge and bucket
  • Wide soft bristle brush
  • Sizing - cooked okra slime and Konnyaku Jelly Poweder will be used in class
  • Parchment paper
  • A couple of old bath towels
  • Large storage container to hold water or to use as a vat
  • Glass measuring cup
  • Paper drying area with airflow
  • Embroidery thread or waxed linen bookbinding thread
  • Straight bookbinding needle
  • Scissors
  • Note taking material
