Stab Binding Part I: Traditional Patterns - Book Binding Foundations Series

11/13/2024 06:00 PM - 08:30 PM ET

Description

This is an introduction of a very beginner-friendly binding called stab binding, a traditional Asian form of bookbinding. This class is the first of a 2 part series of Stab Binding, but one that will also let you explore other book forms. We will explore three different traditional sewing patterns and will give you the foundation needed to take Stab Binding II: Exploring Stab Binding.

This style of binding is an easy bookbinding style to learn, but there are many variations to keep it fun to play and explore It is one of the few bindings that can be done using a sheet of paper without folding and does not require glue.

This class we will learn the traditional

4-hole stitch (YotsumeToji)

Imperial/Noble (Kouki Toji)

and either the Tortoise (Kikko Toji) or Hemp leaf (Asanoha Toji) depending on class prefrence

These styles were popular during the Tokugawa/Endo period in Japan (1603-1867), the roots to this book are potentially as early in the Tang (618-907) dynasty of China. Similar styles are seen in Korea and Vietnam.

Modernly, decorative and artistic designs are used. Typically this is a softcover(paper cover) book, but hard cover variations can be made.  With the paper cover, the inner paper typically comes to the edges

NOTE: We set our pricing to pay our instructors a fair wage and cover materials, but one of FBAC’s goals is to give access to the experience of all things bookbinding and printing to anyone who is interested. If you or someone you know would like to participate in a class but do not have the funding please reach out to contact@frederickbookarts.org and we will do what we can so no one has to miss out on the experiences we offer.
