Monoprinting on Canvas Bags!
Using Lifelike Rubber Fish
2 hours
$30/per person - 6 person minimum
An activity that is great for all ages (including adults), but particularly good for 3rd-9th graders.
Learn some of the basic techniques for printmaking by inking our realistic shaped rubber fish and creating your own works of art including a canvas tote! We will start with a newsprint to experiment and practice with different colors and styles of fish and really get creative. We will make several monoprints on nicer paper once everyone has decided what they like. Monoprints are one of a kind pieces of art that are created using printing techniques. The grand finale of the class will be printing the bags on a canvas tote and heat setting them so they become art you can use every day.
Why Fish? Fish printing is called Gyotaku and is a traditional Japanese printing technique that dates back to the mid 1800’s. Originally it was used to record fish that were caught, the prints were so interesting that it became its own form of art over time. Although real fish can be used, we use rubber fish (they hold up better over time and are less likely to smell!).
We have a variety of other alternative images, patterns, and letters that can be used instead of, or in addition to , fish for your mono-prints upon request. We do recommend the fish for groups with younger kids because they are very easy and fun to work with and a great introduction to printmaking!
This is a party experience that is great for all ages - we do require 2 adults to stay with a party of 6 minors. Adults who do not participate in the printing will not be required to pay the class fee - adults are also welcome to sign-up and participate.
